Ryan 'The Irish Outlaw' Coyne found boxing as a second love, so to speak. Coming out of high school he was a heralded football recruit. Ryan went to the University of Missouri to pursue a Division 1 football career, however his dreams of gridiron glory were not to be. A string of injuries would cut his time at Mizzou short and it was not long after that Ryan would wander into a local boxing club in a gambit that would forever alter his life.
While working part time and attending college full time, Ryan made boxing his true full time endeavor emersing himself in the sweet science. After a brief and successful four year amateur career, Ryan found himself at a life crossroads of sorts. Now a college graduate and with designs on attending law school, Ryan made the difficult decision to eschew the comforts of the business world and opted to enter the professional ranks in the difficult world of prize fighting where he seeks to be an inspiration for everyone who believes in second chances.
Ryan quickly found that the world of pugilism was no fairy tail existence and that breaks in this world were few and far between. Ryan's shot came in 2009 when he got the opportunity of a lifetime to be on the boxing reality show The Contender. The young undefeated, yet untested, prospect just 10 fights into his professional career soon found himself living and fighting with 16 of the best cruiserweights in the world far from the confines of home in the island nation of Singapore. After winning both of his fights in the tournament and fighting successfully into the semifinals of the tournament, Ryan had the misfortune of sustaining a gruesome cut above his right eye from a head butt in a brutal victory against Brockton brawler Tim ’The Hammer’ Flamos(20-4).
Ryan's success on The Contender and instant mainstream crossover appeal caught the eye
of legendary promoter Don King who signed the young undefeated contender to a multi-year promotional contract. Ryan would go onto to capture the WBC U.S. National title in 2010 with a sensational 9th round knockout of undefeated Warren 'The Hitman' Browning (12-0) in front of a sell out crowd in St. Louis. In 2011, now 16-0 and having cracked the top 10 in the world ratings, Ryan was on the cusp of realizing his dream when he signed to challenge reigning WBA Cruiserweight World Champion Guillermo 'El Fellino' Jones (37-3) in his hometown of St. Charles, MO. Again it was not to be, as Jones backed out of the fight on just a week's notice claiming an injury. Ryan would improve to 17-0 with a tougher than expected victory over rugged undefeated late sub David McNemar (13-0).
Undeterred by the adversity of having a world title challenge plucked from his grasp, the undefeated contender continued his relentless pursuit of a championship by running his record to a perfect 20-0 and ascending to number 2 in the World Boxing Association ratings. Like the Irish before him, the hard luck contender has had more than his fair share of bumps in the road. With his mandatory title shot looming, The Irish Outlaw demonstrates that through hard work, dedication, drive and desire his goal of winning the light heavyweight championship of the world is closer than ever before!
